Closing the Book on 2007
I watched an imminently forgettable movie on the tee vee last night. This is a rarity for me, so it's not surprising that there were ads that I had never seen before. One ad was for a strip club on West 20th Street that also serves sushi. Given enough time, I could probably think of two things that go together less well than fileted albacore and fresh snapper, but that's not the point. The point is that the end of the ad featured a guy trying to channel Crazy Eddie! It was insaaaaaaaaaaaaaane.
If you didn't live in the tri-state area in the early 80s, rest assured that the guy in the Crazy Eddie ads, though not Crazy Eddie himself, was iconic. Crazy Eddie was iconic, too - his chain of stores wound up bankrupt and he went to prison for tax fraud.

A co-worker wished me a Happy New Year this morning. I replied in kind, to which she said "Let's hope." It was an odd remark, but fitting, I think.

I promised I'd complete a final accounting for the 2007 RTFT Dead Pool season, and since I can't find any other way to occupy myself at work, now seems likes a good time to do it. By the numbers:
Teams: 17
Total Picks: 255
Unique Picks: 163
Total Deaths: 31 (12.2%)
Unique Deaths: 17 (10.4%)
Highest Team Total: 4, by 3 different teams
Lowest Team Total: 0, by 3 different teams
Median Team Total: 2
Average Team Total: 1.82
Most Frequent Pick: Fidel Castro (9 teams)
A few special awards:
Most Entertaining Roster: Team HighOnPoker (Tom Cruise, Billy Crystal, Pete Doherty, Dakota Fanning, Sean Preston Spears er Federline, The Game, James Hetfield, Paul McCartney, Mary Kate Olsen, Keith Richards, Don Rickles, Andy Rooney, Mr. T, Tina Turner, Abe Vigoda)
Pick That Caused the Most Controversy: Team Drizzle (Barbaro)
Black Horse Special - Least Likely to Die That Did: Team Grubette (Anna Nicole Smith)
Goose Egg Award - No Deaths: (tie) Team AprilCA, Team BkynPlague, Team HighOnPoker
In the end, there can only be one winner of the 2007 RTFT Dead Pool, and that winner is Team DuggleReaper, notching an impressive 4 deaths with a combined age total of 375 (93.75). Unfortunately, because I was too lazy to ever actually set any stakes for the 2007 RTFT Dead Pool, the only thing Team DuggleReaper wins is bragging rights.
Well played all, and special thanks to Mary for acting as my personal Angel of Death, bearing news of great losses.
